NHS BMI calculator goes mobile

In late 2013 we launched the rebuilt NHS Choices BMI calculator. It has always been the site’s most popular tool but built in Flash, it wasn’t able to reach all our users (unless they downloaded the iOS app). We performed a design refresh and added in a couple of nifty new features but the bulk of the work was rebuilding in JavaScript with a sniffer to detect mobile devices that then launches an app-like experience. The stats for January were a great testament to our efforts. Visits shot up from an average of 250,000 a month to 800,000 – with well over half those visits coming from a mobile device.
